Yutong Electric Buses Support Guimarães Public Transport Transition
During European Mobility Week 2025, the Municipality of Guimarães, together with local operator Guimabus, announced the delivery of 50 Yutong U-series battery electric buses. With these vehicles entering service, Guimarães becomes the first city in Portugal to achieve full electrification of its public transport network.

The newly delivered U-series buses will operate across the city’s urban routes, joining an existing fleet of 25 electric buses to form a fully electric fleet of 75 vehicles, replacing conventional diesel buses entirely. The Yutong U-series features a low-floor layout and an intelligent thermal management system, supporting accessibility and stable performance under local climate conditions. The Mayor of Guimarães noted that the investment reflects the city’s commitment to sustainable mobility, offering residents zero-emission, low-noise public transport. The President of Portugal’s Institute for Mobility and Transport described the project as a reference case for Europe, with the potential to encourage greater public transport adoption. The operator has also completed upgrades to charging infrastructure to ensure efficient fleet operations.

Following full electrification, Guimarães is expected to reduce annual carbon emissions by more than 6,000 tonnes. As a historic city, Guimarães demonstrates how the transition to electric buses can be implemented at scale in mid-sized European cities. The deployment of Yutong’s electric vehicles provides a replicable pathway for sustainable urban mobility.
